99% of a Story Listening Training session is conducted in the target language.** This ensures you receive the maximum exposure to the second language during each hour. - **100% privacy guaranteed**: No video or audio input is required from your side.

- Prepare to immerse yourself in an enjoyable and stress-free learning environment.

**During the Session**:

- **One story per session**: At the beginning, stories may be shorter to suit your level. Sessions typically last around 45 minutes.

- In **45 minutes of Story Listening**, you will be exposed to more of the second language than in two hours of a traditional language class.

- **Immersion and comprehension**: You will engage with the story and naturally acquire the language.

- **Comprehension-Aiding Supplementation (CAS)**: The session incorporates tools like drawings, gestures, and simple explanations, rather than relying solely on vocabulary drills. This method enhances understanding and keeps the experience engaging.

**After the Session**:

- Feel refreshed and motivated, ready to look forward to the next session.

- **No homework**: There’s no need to complete exercises or drills after the session.

- **Feedback welcomed**: Let me know if you enjoyed the story. If you’d like, you can write a summary of the story in your native language. This optional activity helps track your progress and evaluate your comprehension.

Story Listening 101

1. What is Story-Listening (SL)?

Story-Listening (SL) is an innovative method of language acquisition through immersion in stories. It mirrors the way children naturally acquire their native language. This method was created by **Dr. Beniko Mason**: [story-listening.net](https://www.story-listening.net). The SL method is built on the principle that language is best learned through **Comprehensible Input**—understanding the meaning of messages rather than memorizing grammar rules.

SL brings this principle to life by surrounding students with engaging, language-rich stories tailored to their level of comprehension, without requiring formal pre- or post-lesson activities. Instead, students immerse themselves in enjoyable stories that naturally promote language learning.

Key Features of Story-Listening:

- Foundation in the Input Hypothesis: SL is grounded in the belief that **listening** and **reading** are essential for language acquisition.

- Introduction of Auditory Input: To enhance comprehension, auditory input is seamlessly integrated, enriching the learning experience.

- Optimal Input: SL provides high-quality, engaging, and comprehensible input that matches the learner’s level of understanding.

- Focus on Comprehension: Unlike traditional methods, SL eliminates the stress of output activities, pre-teaching vocabulary, error correction, and tests. This allows students to fully immerse themselves in the language. Research shows that excluding these activities accelerates progress and allows more time for Story-Listening.

- Outstanding Outcomes: SL has consistently shown remarkable improvements in vocabulary, test scores, and overall academic success by focusing on input rather than output.

- Empirical Support and Motivation: Studies validate the effectiveness of SL, with students motivated by their progress and the joy of learning, which fosters ongoing engagement.

Story Listening, combined with **GSSR** (Guided Self-Selected Reading), offers a comprehensive and efficient approach to language acquisition. While SL promotes subconscious learning, it creates a foundation for natural and sustainable language acquisition, suitable for children and adults alike.

2. How Language Acquisition Takes Place

Decades of research have demonstrated that:

1. Language acquisition occurs when we understand what we hear and read—this is "Comprehensible Input."

2. Students need large amounts of compelling, comprehensible input to make significant progress.

3. Second-language learners go through similar stages as native speakers when acquiring a language.

4. Acquiring a language (subconscious) and learning about a language (conscious) are distinct processes.

5. Consciously learned rules are rarely helpful in real communication. They assist only with written tests or editing.

6. Anxiety, defensiveness, or fear in a language classroom hinders acquisition.

3. The Goal of the Story Listening Course

The primary goal of this course is to develop **autonomous acquirers** of a second language—students who can continue improving independently after the course ends. The aim is not to create perfect users of the language during the SL course but to ensure they reach a high level of competence and confidence in the long term.

Language acquisition begins with Story-Listening. During an SL session, a teacher tells an engaging story—often a timeless fairy or folk tale—using language that the students mostly understand.

How the Process Works:

- Some words or parts of the story may be unfamiliar. Teachers make the story comprehensible through:

- Contextual explanations and descriptions in the target language.

- Drawings and written words.

- Limited use of the students’ first language.

- Leveraging students’ background knowledge.

- These strategies ensure students can easily grasp the content, as understanding is the foundation of language acquisition.

By integrating Story-Listening with GSSR, this course provides a complete solution to the challenges of language learning.

4. Evaluation

Evaluation in SL is informal and non-threatening. Depending on their age, students may:

- Write a brief summary of the story in their first language.

- Draw pictures to reflect their understanding.

These summaries provide teachers with feedback on their performance and help track student progress. However, they are not used for grading purposes. Instead, they serve as preparation for future sessions and to monitor individual development.

5. Consistency is Key

Consistency is crucial for success in Story-Listening. Students must:

- Attend sessions regularly.

- Be attentive and focused during the story.

- Engage with the process by completing summaries.

Language acquisition requires time for the brain to process input in the background before noticeable progress emerges. Regular attendance accelerates this process, naturally improving listening skills and expanding vocabulary.

6. Story-Listening is for Learning, Not Entertainment

The primary purpose of Story-Listening is to provide rich, comprehensible input. While many stories are enjoyable, not all will be highly entertaining. Students should remain patient and focused, understanding that SL is a serious learning method, not a form of casual entertainment or procrastination.

Students are encouraged to actively listen, follow the story, and complete summaries to reinforce their understanding and make progress.

7. The Next Stage: Guided Self-Selected Reading (GSSR)

GSSR serves as an intermediate step between Story-Listening and reading authentic texts written for native speakers. The teacher plays a crucial role by:

- Guiding students to choose reading material that matches their interests and reading level.

- Monitoring students’ experiences with the books to provide personalized recommendations.

Students are asked to submit brief reports after reading, including:

- A summary of the book.

- Their impressions of its content.

- An assessment of its difficulty.

Transition to Authentic Reading:

In one to two semesters, some students may progress to reading authentic books written for native speakers. Others may remain in the GSSR stage for up to three years. Unlike traditional methods that push students to read difficult material too soon, GSSR allows for gradual, comfortable progress.

My Journey with Language Acquisition and Story Listening

I have personally embraced language acquisition as my preferred approach to learning languages, and I consider Story Listening to be the most advanced and effective method for doing so. My own success in acquiring English was greatly supported by stories used by my exceptional English teacher. Another key factor was my lack of fear when making mistakes. Over the years, I’ve seen many talented students fail because they relied on the Grammar-Translation method and were paralyzed by their fear of making errors. I aim to change this by providing an affordable and effective alternative.

I have significant experience with **Comprehensible Input Language Acquisition (CI LA)** across various languages. I successfully learned English, dabbled in Czech (which I later forgot), and rediscovered my Ukrainian language skills after thinking they were lost. I even managed to acquire Polish to a functional level despite encountering challenges along the way. I am proficient in English, Russian, Polish, and Ukrainian. While I’m not a native English speaker, this gives me the unique advantage of “knowing the problem from within.”

I view learning a second language (L2) as a skill—similar to mastering a martial art—rather than simply an academic subject like Math or History. My favorite martial art is **Judo**, which inspired the name **L2JUDO.CLUB** for my Story Listening project. This initiative is my way of guiding learners on a gentle, holistic path to L2 acquisition, not just offering another language school.

The Philosophy of L2JUDO.CLUB

Imagine your native language (L1) is like mastering a martial art or athletic discipline. For instance, you may not be an Olympic-level boxer, but you can still use boxing effectively. Now, imagine you decide to learn Judo to complement your boxing for self-defense purposes.

To acquire this new martial art (L2), you’ll rely on your body and mind, just as you did when mastering your native language (L1). However, the process of acquiring new skills in Judo—or a second language—is gradual and methodical.

1. **Can you expect to use Judo in a dangerous situation after only learning the Japanese names of throws and watching championship videos?**

Of course not. Similarly, it’s unreasonable to expect fluency in an L2 after a short “boot camp” when thrown into live conversations full of anxiety and rapid communication. Simply memorizing vocabulary lists won’t help you when it’s time to use the language in real-life situations.

2. **Would you try the most difficult Judo techniques at the start of your training?**

No, because you might injure yourself or give up altogether. The same applies to language learning. You need to progress gradually. Begin with extensive listening to build comprehension, then move to reading, speaking, and finally writing. Rushing this process can lead to mental burnout or even a complete halt in progress.

3. **Would you be frustrated by warm-ups, repetitive drills, and gradual progress?**

Repetition is key to mastery—both in martial arts and in language acquisition. Gradual progress reduces anxiety and ensures a low-stress, low-trauma experience.

The Power of Story Listening

This is where the Story Listening method truly shines. It provides students with unlimited opportunities to adjust the difficulty of comprehensible input through a variety of stories, tailored to different levels and topics. Repetition occurs naturally and seamlessly, without requiring conscious effort, as learners become immersed in the narratives.

Story Listening makes it possible to apply the **Kaizen** philosophy to language acquisition: a series of small, continuous improvements. Each idiom understood or story comprehended becomes a “small victory,” creating instant gratification and self-propelled motivation.

As Kano Jigoro, the founder of Judo, said:

“If there is effort, there is always accomplishment.”

This principle of steady, consistent effort applies equally to mastering a martial art and acquiring a new language.

Why Choose L2JUDO.CLUB?

At L2JUDO.CLUB, Story Listening is not just a method; it’s a healing experience that makes language acquisition a natural and enjoyable journey. Through this gentle approach, you can build your L2 skills in the same way you’d master a martial art—step by step, with focus and dedication.
